What are some tips for first time dental insurance buyers to avoid rip offs and scams?

never having bought dental insurance before can be scary, anyone have any tips to avoid misunderstandings, and high costs, and things like this ? Corporations clearly can trick people to get into their pocket books big time, so what are some things to look out for and avoid when you have never bought dental insurance before? (In California if it matters)

Normally, dental insurance is NOT a good buy. Dental insurance typically only covers 50% of the work, has a very low yearly limit ($1000-$2000), and each procedure has a deductible attached (usually about $50). For the price it doesn’t cover itself.

I’m a self-employed so there is no "company benefits" and my dad is an insurance salesperson. There is NO WAY I can go a day without medical insurance. He WILL NOT sale me dental insurance because it just isn’t worth the money.

Also, my dentist discounts everything now that I don’t have dental insurance. I didn’t ask for this; he just started doing it.

How would I get a bachelors degree to become a dental hygienist?

I have to start at a community college, but the one in my town only has dental assistant classes. Are those the same classes for dental hygienists? Well i’m planning on moving in two years to chicago so I will continue my education there. Basically what classes do I take if I want a Bachelors degree to become a dental hygienist.

i went through to be a dental assistant, and it isnt the same thing. hygienists tend to make a little more and do more then assistants (like scaling) there are many community colleges that are starting to offer this. most of them just started offering it within the last couple of years. so you can either wait for one to open up near you, or think about a different career path.

just a for warning, i attended Medix school(a community college) and if you have those near you, they do offer dental hygienist coarse, but please don’t go there, the coarse is awesome, but the way they run things there is horrible.

What are some good dental Colleges and and what do I need to take as classes?

I;m really considering being a dentist, but i have no idea what are some good schools that offer a dental program. Also, I have no idea on types of classes i will need to take in college. Where might i find this info?

It’s all at the dental school web sites! Usually the requirements are

1 year of biology(2 semesters with lab)
3 semesters of chemistry(with lab)
1 year of physics(2 semesters with lab)
1 semester of calculus
1 year of english

These are the general requirements but some schools require more or less. A good dental school I can think of off the top of my head is USC. I have a friend who graduated from USC dental school and she loved it! Also dental schools require a test called the DAT which consists of science questions(kinda like the SAT). Get a GPA of around 3.5 and you should be able to get in somewhere! Good luck!

I need Dental Work done and am considering a student to use me as a patient. Where is a dental school that will provide this service to me for free or at a minimal charge?
…actually, my husband has 3 teeth to be pulled. All broken off at the gums and have all had root canals. Our dentist wants $750.00 per tooth…are geographical area is Northwest Florida. It is cheaper to buy a plane ticket to our hometown in Eastern Oregon to have this done. In fact, I think we found our answer. Thanks everybody for your help…much appreciated.

What are the benefits of being a dental assistant?

Is it worth it? I’m thinking about signing up for the program, it requires 11 Saturdays to become a dental assistant. Sounds a little short. I’ve always been interested in the dental field.

There is job security. You work with people, which could be either a positive or a negative. You work in a clean and comfortable environment. It is a respectable profession. Many times dental assistants go on to study and be a dental hygienist. The experience as a dental assistant will help you get into a school to be a dental hygienist.
