the reason you don’t want to do the “harsh back-and-forth motion” is because you are slowly wearing down your gums. your gums aren’t like fingernails, they don’t grow back with time. so if you continue doing this in 20 years your teeth will have less than the normal gum coverage. and you will have to suffer with sensitive teeth for the rest of your life

That’s because as usual expert village is giving silly advice. If you do the harsh motions and the gums bleed that is due to plaque irritating the area where your gum ends and your tooth begins that you can see. It’s a bodily responce, not a damage. In fact if you brush your teeth like this for a long time, they don’t bleed, because there is no plaque to cause the blood responce. The blood is only in the gums to tackle the problem of the plaque.
