Does a patient with multiple sclerosis need a medical consult before dental treatment?
I am currently a dental hygiene student working on a project. I have looked all over the internet, but I can’t find out if a patient with ms needs a medical consult before they can get there teeth cleaned. Any information would be very appreciated.
I’VE HAD SOME PATIENTS WITH M.S. AND THEY DO NOT NEED A MEDICAL CONSULT UNLESS THEY HAVE A HISTORY OF HEART PROBLEMS OR IMMUNO-COMPRIMISED FACTORS THE SAME AS ANYONE ELSE.

I never ask a consult before getting my teeth cleaned. IN FACT, IF anything my doctors would encourage me to constantly have my teeth cleaned because it would contribute to BAD health to have cavaties and thereby triggering my M.S. However, before doing anything BIG I definently ask my neurologist. (Not like removing a cavaty b/c this promotes good health and having a cavaty triggers my m.s.) For instance, I had to ask my neurologist what he thought about me getting my wisdom teeth out, and he said ABSOLUTELY NOT. UNLESS I have to. So basically…you can, and NEED to do to promote good health. Anything that makes your immune system work unnecesarily is a huge no no. I.e. plastic surgery, surgerys you dont need….etc.
